By Ahmed Ashraf Published April 1, 2025

In a recent development, Mohamed Zubair, a 57-year-old resident of Male’ (Dhaftharu number RS 1704), has been apprehended on charges of possessing pornographic material and allegedly blackmailing his former spouse.

The Criminal Court’s order, issued today, details that law enforcement presented evidence indicating Zubair’s involvement in threatening and coercing his ex-wife. Given the severity of the allegations and the potential risk posed to the community, the court has mandated a 10-day detention period for Zubair.

In the Maldives, the production, possession, sale, dissemination, distribution, or importation of pornography or pornographic material is illegal. Additionally, blackmail, especially involving intimate content, is a grave offense under Maldivian law, carrying stringent penalties upon conviction.
