The President extended his congratulations to all countries elected to the Commission and emphasized the importance of collective partnership in addressing pressing matters concerning women’s rights and empowerment. He reaffirmed the Maldives’ readiness to collaborate with international partners to advance these critical issues.
Over the years, the Maldives has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to enhancing the status of women both domestically and internationally. Notably, the enactment of the Gender Equality Act has fortified protections against discrimination and expanded economic opportunities for women. The nation’s dedication is further evidenced by its adherence to international conventions aimed at promoting gender equality.
Despite these advancements, challenges remain. As of February 2024, women held only 5% of parliamentary seats in the Maldives, underscoring the need for continued efforts toward political inclusivity.
The Maldives’ election to the CSW signifies global recognition of its progress and commitment to gender equality. As the nation prepares to assume this influential role, it stands poised to contribute meaningfully to the global discourse on women’s rights and to advocate for policies that foster an inclusive and equitable future for all.
