In a major step toward decentralizing public services, the Department of National Registration (DNR) has launched ID card issuance and printing services on the island of Gadhdhoo, making it the latest addition in the government’s nationwide expansion of essential services.
With this development, Gadhdhoo becomes the first island in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll—outside of the atoll capital—to offer on-site ID card printing. Residents will now be able to receive their national ID cards directly from the island, eliminating the need for processing in Malé and significantly cutting down waiting times.
According to the DNR, this is the 15th island-based location in the Maldives where such services have been introduced. The initiative is part of a broader plan to improve accessibility and streamline government processes by bringing key services closer to the public.
The expansion began in September last year, with ID card services first being launched in Gaafu Alifu Atoll Council and Villingili Council. Since then, the program has extended to several other islands, including Dhaalu Kudahuvadhoo, Haa Dhaalu Kulhudhuffushi, and Haa Alifu Dhidhdhoo.
Most recently, in March, an agreement was signed with the Lhaviyani Atoll Council to facilitate ID card services through its council office, further strengthening local administrative capabilities.
This decentralization effort aligns with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s commitment to ensure ID card services are accessible in every inhabited island and atoll capital. The Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology, in collaboration with DNR, is continuing work to roll out the necessary equipment and infrastructure in more locations across the country.
