The State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has reported a significant surge in electricity consumption in the Greater Malé region, reaching an unprecedented 114 megawatts at 3:00 PM last Thursday. This peak, the highest recorded this year, coincides with the nation’s hottest season, prompting STELCO’s Managing Director, Hussain Fahmy, to urge residents to adopt energy-saving measures.
In a statement shared on his official “X” account, Fahmy emphasized the importance of mindful electricity usage during this period of elevated temperatures. He recommended setting air conditioners to no lower than 25°C and limiting the use of electrical appliances to essential needs. “Conserving energy benefits both the individual and the community,” he noted.
The Maldives Meteorological Service has indicated that April and May are typically the hottest months, with recent data showing a rise in the perceived temperature. This increase in heat has led to a corresponding rise in electricity demand, particularly for cooling systems.
STELCO has previously highlighted that air conditioning accounts for approximately 40% of household electricity bills. In response to the growing demand, the company has been proactive in enhancing its infrastructure, including the installation of additional generators to ensure uninterrupted power supply during peak periods.
Fahmy also addressed concerns regarding billing, assuring customers that STELCO is committed to transparency and accuracy. Efforts are underway to issue monthly electricity bills within one day of meter readings, a significant improvement from the previous 20 to 25-day delay. This initiative aims to reduce confusion and enhance customer trust in the billing process.
As the nation continues to experience high temperatures, STELCO’s appeal for energy conservation serves as a timely reminder of the collective responsibility to manage electricity usage effectively.
