In a compelling video message presented at the World Health Day 2025 event at Barceló Nasandhura Malé Hotel, WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus lauded President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu for his decisive leadership in advancing tobacco control measures in the Maldives.
Dr. Tedros commended President Muizzu for implementing comprehensive policies aimed at reducing tobacco use, including the ratification of significant amendments to the Tobacco Control Law, expansion of smoke-free zones, prohibition of e-cigarettes and e-liquids, raising the minimum age for tobacco sales to 21, and banning tobacco advertising and sponsorship.
He highlighted the Maldives’ efforts to increase tobacco taxation, making these products less accessible, and the establishment of a nationwide cessation program offering free support across all health facilities.
“Your vision for a smoke-free Maldives will save lives and improve the health and well-being of current and future generations,” Dr. Tedros stated, emphasizing the global significance of the Maldives’ initiatives.
President Muizzu’s recognition with the WHO Director-General’s Special Recognition Award underscores the Maldives’ commitment to public health and sets a precedent for other nations striving towards a tobacco-free future.
