“Urgent Action Is Needed”: President Muizzu Slams Israeli Strikes on Iran

By Ahmed Ashraf Published June 13, 2025

In a bold declaration, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has publicly rebuked Israel’s recent military operation against the Islamic Republic of Iran, branding it a blatant violation of international law and a serious threat to regional security. His message, delivered via X, carries both moral force and geopolitical nuance.

Strongly condemns the Israeli aggression against the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Such acts constitute a serious violation of international law and jeopardise regional peace and stability.

Urgent action must be taken to stop the escalation of tensions.

President Muizzu warned that Israel’s aerial assault—allegedly targeting Iran’s military and nuclear infrastructure—is a dangerous escalation. He highlighted the legal implications, asserting these strikes undermine global norms and jeopardize fragile peace in the Middle East. Echoing his long-standing stance, the president emphasized the urgent need to de‑escalate and re‑prioritize diplomacy.

This statement comes amid unfolding events: on June 13, 2025, Israel struck around 100 sites in Iran, including military centers and the Natanz nuclear complex. Reports confirm the deaths of top Iranian commanders and nuclear scientists . In rapid response, Iran launched over a hundred drones toward Israel, spiking oil prices and triggering airspace closures in neighboring states .

International reaction has been swift. Germany called on both nations to avoid further escalation . The UN and NATO urged restraint. Meanwhile, Iran’s leaders have threatened harsh retaliation, deeming Israel’s assault a “crime” and warning of dire consequences .

President Muizzu’s condemnation aligns with his consistent foreign-policy stance. In April, he imposed a ban on Israeli passport-holders entering the Maldives to protest military aggression in Gaza . He has previously spoken out at the UN against violence targeting journalists and civilians .

Speaking now, President Muizzu urged global leaders to act decisively. “Urgent action must be taken,” he pressed, demanding steps to halt the spiral of conflict. His message urges Maldives allies—especially within the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the UN—to champion peace and uphold international justice.

As tensions soar between Israel and Iran, President Muizzu’s statement signals strong diplomatic positioning by the Maldives. It reinforces his broader aim: championing sovereign rights, challenging perceived aggression, and elevating the voice of small nations on the global stage.
