A Leader Who Cares: President Muizzu Ensures Low Prices for Ramadan!

By Ahmed Ashraf Published February 19, 2025

In a decisive move to support citizens during the holy month of Ramadan, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has directed the State Trading Organisation (STO) to release essential food items at reduced prices. This initiative aims to alleviate the financial burden on Maldivian families as they prepare for the fasting period.

Under this directive, STO has proactively imported and distributed key commodities, including onions, potatoes, eggs, limes, and coconuts, ensuring their availability at affordable rates. The first shipment has already reached the market, with plans for regular subsequent imports to maintain consistent supply throughout Ramadan.

STO has announced competitive pricing for these essentials:

  • Onions: Available at MVR 16 per kilogram, with a sack priced at MVR 350. Purchases of 10 or more sacks are offered at a discounted rate of MVR 340 per sack.
  • Potatoes: Priced at MVR 18 per kilogram, with a sack available for MVR 310.
  • Eggs: Each egg is sold at MVR 2, with a case priced at MVR 320.
  • Limes: Offered at MVR 40 per kilogram, with a case of five limes priced at MVR 145.
  • Coconuts: Available at MVR 5 per coconut, significantly lower than the current market price, which ranges between MVR 10 and MVR 25.

In addition to these items, STO has expanded its imports to include a variety of fresh vegetables, fruits, processed foods, and cooking ingredients. This comprehensive approach ensures that households have access to a wide range of quality products during the festive season.

Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, emphasized the government’s commitment to price stability during Ramadan. He highlighted that measures are in place to monitor and control the prices of 141 food items, with 32 identified as essential. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to prevent market-driven price hikes and ensure affordability for consumers.

President Muizzu’s leadership reflects a deep understanding of the challenges faced by citizens during Ramadan. By prioritizing the availability and affordability of essential goods, the administration reaffirms its dedication to the well-being and prosperity of the Maldivian people.
