The Bank of Maldives (BML), in partnership with the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology’s National Centre for Information Technology (NCIT) and Mastercard, has unveiled the Maldives Digital Partnership Program—a five-year initiative set to accelerate the country’s digital transformation.
The program aligns with the government’s vision of creating a digitally empowered Maldives by overhauling the nation’s digital infrastructure and broadening access to secure, efficient digital services. It will focus on several key areas:
- Modernizing digital identity and payment systems to improve accessibility and strengthen security.
- Enhancing cybersecurity through AI-driven solutions.
- Digitizing government services and other critical sectors to expand the national digital payments ecosystem.
- Introducing advanced payment systems for public transportation, aimed at improving efficiency and convenience.
- Using data analytics to deliver actionable insights for tourism and other key economic sectors.
BML CEO and Managing Director Mohamed Shareef described the initiative as a “transformative journey” for the Maldives, adding:
“By combining local expertise with Mastercard’s global technology capabilities, we are confident in building a strong digital foundation for the nation’s future. This program is a significant step toward a more inclusive, secure, and digitally advanced society”.
Industry analysts say the partnership represents a major leap forward for the Maldives’ digital economy, laying the groundwork for innovation, resilience, and inclusive growth in both public and private sectors.
