President Mohamed Muizzu has intensified calls for constitutional reform to align presidential and parliamentary elections, describing the proposed change as vital for strengthening democracy.
Speaking before a large crowd of supporters at the People’s National Congress headquarters,President Muizzu argued that the current system of holding elections months apart weakens fairness and accountability.

“A ‘yes’ vote in the referendum is a vote for a brighter future, for true democracy, and for the elimination of corruption,” he said.
The President explained that synchronising elections would ensure a more balanced Parliament and reinforce checks and balances, preventing any single political force from consolidating excessive power.

Addressing concerns from within political circles about the potential loss of a parliamentary supermajority, President Muizzu said the reform reflects a commitment to national interest over political advantage.
“We prioritise the nation over our own political benefit,” he stated.
President Muizzu also urged citizens to actively participate in the electoral process, noting that voters will cast ballots for council representatives, Women’s Development Committee members, and the referendum.
He concluded by calling for unity and informed decision-making, urging Maldivians to look beyond political divisions and vote in a way that safeguards the country’s democratic future.
