After Years of Waiting, PayPal Finally Comes to the Maldives Through Ooredoo Partnership

By Ahmed Ashraf Published October 14, 2025

In a major step toward advancing the Maldives’ digital economy, PayPal and Ooredoo Fintech have announced their intent to collaborate, paving the way for seamless international digital transactions for consumers and businesses across the country.

The partnership, expected to go live in 2026, will enable Maldivians to link their PayPal and m-Faisaa wallets, allowing users to shop globally, transfer funds easily, and engage in cross-border e-commerce. The initiative also aims to empower local businesses to expand their reach by selling directly to international customers — a breakthrough moment for entrepreneurs and small enterprises seeking access to global markets.

Speaking on the collaboration, Khalid Al Hamadi, CEO and Managing Director of Ooredoo Fintech Maldives, described it as “an exciting time for individuals and businesses in the Maldives,” emphasizing that cross-border transaction capability is a critical enabler for the nation’s ongoing digital transformation.

Echoing this sentiment, Minister of Economic Development Mohamed Saeed noted that the collaboration represents a pivotal moment in the Maldives’ economic modernization, highlighting its potential to create jobs, foster entrepreneurship, and bridge the digital divide. Saeed added that initiatives such as this strengthen the country’s position in the global digital economy, ensuring that technological growth benefits every community.

Ooredoo Fintech, a wholly owned subsidiary of Ooredoo Group, has already launched successful digital payment solutions in Qatar (Ooredoo Money), Oman (walletii), and the Maldives (m-Faisaa). The company’s expansion through partnerships like PayPal reinforces its mission to financially empower regional consumers and businesses by creating an integrated fintech ecosystem.

The collaboration also supports President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s national digital transformation agenda, which prioritizes innovation, financial inclusion, and the development of digital infrastructure to enhance economic resilience and global competitiveness.

With PayPal’s global reach and Ooredoo’s established local fintech expertise, this partnership is set to redefine how Maldivians transact, trade, and thrive in the digital era, marking a milestone in the country’s journey toward a cashless, connected future.
