Airline operators have expressed strong confidence that Velana International Airport’s (VIA) new passenger terminal will redefine the Maldives’ travel experience, following a series of extensive operational trials ahead of its highly anticipated opening on July 26.
The comprehensive trials assessed every stage of the passenger journey, including check-in, security screening, baggage handling, boarding processes, and arrivals. Representatives from major airlines serving VIA participated as observers, closely evaluating the new facility’s readiness to deliver seamless operations and exceptional service quality.
Munaz Ali, Chairman of the Airlines Operators Committee and Airport Manager for Etihad Airways, highlighted the significance of this milestone. “Airlines have long awaited a terminal in the Maldives that aligns with global service standards. The new terminal promises to fulfill this need, and we are thrilled with the progress,” he stated.
Echoing this optimism, Ahmed Nahushan Nizar, Vice Chairman of the Airlines Operators Committee and Airport Service Manager for Qatar Airways, emphasized the impact on passenger perceptions. “This terminal will showcase the Maldives to travelers in a new light, providing a uniquely elevated experience from arrival to departure,” he remarked.
Meanwhile, Ahmed Hanam Faiz, Station Manager for Malaysia Airlines, praised the facility’s comprehensive design and accessibility. “MACL has ensured that the terminal is fully equipped and accessible to everyone. It’s modern, welcoming, and designed with passenger comfort at its core,” he noted.
Key outcomes from the operational trials included a seamless check-in experience enabled by advanced processing systems and expanded counters, improved passenger flow through optimized pathways that reduce congestion, and a state-of-the-art baggage handling system designed for efficiency and reliability. Additionally, passengers can expect smoother boarding thanks to modern passenger boarding bridges, as well as a streamlined arrival process featuring upgraded baggage claim and customs areas.
The enthusiastic endorsement from airlines underscores the close collaboration between Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) and its aviation partners to ensure the terminal meets international operational benchmarks and exceeds passenger expectations.
With final preparations underway, MACL is on track to open the new terminal on July 26. The facility promises to offer a range of modern services and amenities that will significantly enrich the overall travel experience in the Maldives, further reinforcing the country’s standing as a premier global tourism destination.
