A powerful explosion in a car near the famed Red Fort metro station in the heart of India’s capital killed at least eight people and injured several others, officials confirmed on Monday.
The incident occurred on a crowded street adjacent to Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort Metro Station in Old Delhi during evening rush-hour. Flames erupted immediately, engulfing several vehicles including three to six cars and auto-rickshaws, before fire‐fighters arrived and brought the blaze under control.

Law enforcement authorities are investigating the cause of the blast. A spokesperson for the Delhi Police, Sanjay Tyagi, said the incident appeared to originate from a vehicle parked near the entrance to the metro station, but no definitive conclusion has been reached.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah held immediate consultations with senior security agencies, and Narendra Modi’s office reported that the Prime Minister had been briefed on the situation. A multi‐agency response has been mobilised including forensic and counter-terror units, though no group has claimed responsibility.
The incident has triggered a nationwide security alert. States neighbouring Delhi, including Uttar Pradesh and major urban centres such as Mumbai, have stepped up patrols and tightened checkpoints at metro stations and critical infrastructure.
The Red Fort—also known as Lal Qila—is a 17-century Mughal-era fortress and prominent tourist attraction.
