The Bank of Maldives (BML) and American Express commemorated 20 years of their exclusive partnership at a celebratory event, reflecting on their achievements and outlining future goals. Speaking at the occasion, BML CEO Mohamed Shareef expressed gratitude for the enduring collaboration and highlighted its pivotal role in the development of Maldives’ financial sector.
“This evening is not just about looking back on two decades of collaboration but also celebrating the journey we’ve traveled together and the bright future ahead,” said the CEO.
Since its inception in 2004, the partnership has been instrumental in modernizing the Maldivian banking landscape. Among their accomplishments are the introduction of the first-ever credit cards in the Maldives and the nationwide expansion of American Express acceptance, from the capital city of Malé to the nation’s renowned luxury resorts.

CEO Shareef also recalled the challenges faced during the launch of credit cards in the Maldives. “It was a bold initiative with limited knowledge, but our team’s enthusiasm and determination ensured its success,” he shared.

The partnership’s contributions extended beyond banking. Initiatives like the “Experience Maldives” campaign promoted the Maldives as a global tourism destination, enhancing its reputation on the international stage. Additionally, the recent launch of the Maldives’ first Shari’ah-compliant credit card in collaboration with American Express marked another milestone in their journey.
Looking ahead, Shareef reaffirmed a shared commitment to innovation and digital transformation, aiming to meet evolving customer expectations and deliver next-generation financial solutions.
The event concluded with acknowledgments to the teams at both organizations for their relentless efforts and a toast to the enduring bond between BML and American Express. “Thank you, Amex, for being an amazing partner,” Shareef said, as attendees celebrated two decades of transformative progress.
