Bank of Maldives (BML) has been recognised by Mastercard for its pivotal contribution to advancing the Maldives’ digital economy, earning an award for its role in the Digital Country Partnership initiative.
The accolade was presented to BML CEO and Managing Director Mohamed Shareef by Sandun Hapugoda, Mastercard’s Country Manager for Sri Lanka and the Maldives, during the Digital Finance Leadership event held in Singapore.
The Digital Country Partnership, signed in August 2025 between the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology, Bank of Maldives, and Mastercard, represents a major step in the country’s digital transformation efforts. The initiative focuses on expanding access to secure and efficient digital services while strengthening the Maldives’ overall digital infrastructure.
Through this collaboration, BML and Mastercard aim to create new opportunities for individuals, businesses, and communities by promoting innovation and financial inclusion across the islands.
Since becoming a Principal Member of Mastercard in 2002, BML has partnered with the global payments leader on several transformative projects that have reshaped the nation’s financial landscape — including enabling contactless payments on the Raajje Transport Link (RTL) as part of the Maldives’ growing smart city ecosystem.
The recognition from Mastercard highlights BML’s leadership in digital finance, underscoring the bank’s commitment to leveraging technology and partnerships to modernise financial services in the Maldives.
Officials noted that the award reflects BML’s continued efforts to champion innovation and collaboration in pursuit of a secure, inclusive, and technologically empowered economy.
