A British journalist has been missing in Brazil for 11 days, with authorities and a local foreign correspondents’ association intensifying efforts to locate her.
Charlotte Alice Peet, 32, was last in contact with a friend on February 8, according to a statement released by the Association of Foreign Press Correspondents (ACIE), based in Rio de Janeiro. The journalist, who was in São Paulo at the time, reportedly mentioned plans to travel to Rio de Janeiro and was in search of a place to stay in the city. However, when her friend declined to host her, Peet’s communications ceased shortly after.
Days later, Peet’s family in the UK reached out to the friend after losing contact with her. Concerned for her safety, the friend reported Peet’s disappearance to the police last Monday. Although Peet’s last known location was in São Paulo, the case was transferred to local authorities in the city, who are now handling the investigation.
In response to the ongoing search, the ACIE has urged Brazilian authorities to step up their efforts to locate the missing journalist as quickly as possible. “ACIE and its board of directors appeal to the competent authorities to intensify the search in order to find the British journalist as soon as possible,” the association said in its statement.
Peet had lived in Brazil previously as a correspondent and returned to the country in November 2024 after a brief period back in the UK. According to her LinkedIn profile, she is fluent in Portuguese and has contributed to various Brazilian publications as a freelancer throughout her career.
Her sudden disappearance has raised significant concern among her family, colleagues, and the broader journalist community. Authorities continue to investigate, with hopes of finding Peet safe and well.
