Cabinet Rallies Behind President Muizzu’s Vision to Protect Youth with Historic Tobacco Generational Ban

By Ahmed Ashraf Published April 13, 2025

In a groundbreaking move to protect the health of future generations, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration has approved a “Generational Ban” on tobacco, prohibiting the purchase, sale, and use of tobacco products for individuals born on or after January 1, 2007. This decisive action, endorsed by the Cabinet, aims to foster a tobacco-free generation and is set to take effect on November 1, 2025, following a six-month implementation period post-ratification.

The decision was made during the latest Cabinet meeting, where ministers held extensive discussions on how to effectively introduce a tobacco-free future for the Maldives. The meeting concluded with a unanimous agreement to enforce the Generational Ban and initiate necessary amendments to laws and regulations to implement the policy across the country.

As part of the implementation strategy, the Ministry of Finance and Planning, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, has been tasked with strengthening tobacco cessation services. These efforts will focus on providing comprehensive support to individuals wishing to quit tobacco use.

Demonstrating a commitment to inclusive governance, President Muizzu also launched a public opinion poll on his official “X” (formerly Twitter) account. This marked the first time a Maldivian President has used a social media platform during their term to directly seek citizen input on a major policy initiative. The poll received an overwhelmingly positive response, with a majority supporting stricter measures to keep the younger generation away from tobacco.

In addition to legislative efforts, President Muizzu has called on businesses involved in the tobacco trade to consider transitioning into other sectors, underlining the administration’s vision of aligning economic activities with public health goals.

The Generational Ban is a continuation of President Muizzu’s strong anti-tobacco stance, which includes recent actions such as banning the use and import of vapes and increasing duties on tobacco imports. These measures collectively reflect the government’s broader strategy to promote healthier lifestyles and safeguard the well-being of future generations.

As the Maldives takes a bold step forward, President Muizzu’s leadership signals a new era of health-focused governance that could serve as a model for nations around the world.
