In a tonight address to the residents of Kudahuvadhoo in Dhaalu Atoll, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced the continuation of utility bill discounts during the upcoming Ramadan. This initiative, first introduced in 2024, aims to alleviate the financial burden on citizens during the holy month. The President emphasized that, regardless of increased consumption, electricity and water charges would not surpass the rates of a regular month.
Reflecting on the previous year’s efforts, the State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) reported an expenditure of MVR 61.7 million to provide these discounts, resulting in an average reduction of MVR 333.14 per utility bill in March and MVR 656.79 in April.
In addition to the utility discounts, the government has previously distributed staple food items to households as part of its Ramadan assistance. This year, the focus will shift to providing a carton of canned tuna for each household, with preparations already underway.
President Muizzu also addressed concerns about misinformation, urging citizens to remain vigilant against attempts to mislead the public regarding governmental initiatives. He emphasized the importance of staying informed and discerning about the nation’s developmental efforts.
These measures underscore the administration’s commitment to easing the financial strains on Maldivian households during Ramadan, ensuring that increased utility usage does not translate into higher costs for citizens.
