Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has announced that adverse weather conditions, including heavy rainfall and strong winds, are causing flight landing difficulties at Velana International Airport (VIA), leading to delays. A senior MACL official informed local media “Mihaaru” that VIA has faced a hectic day, with morning gusts preventing some flights from landing temporarily. One aircraft was diverted to Trivandrum due to low visibility.
The Maldives Meteorological Service has issued a Yellow Alert from K. Atoll to Th. Atoll, effective from 11 AM to 3 PM today, forecasting heavy rain and thunderstorms in the area. Winds could strengthen up to 45 miles per hour within the cloud band. Improvement is expected from Sunday.
With many travelers returning from Umrah during school holidays, MACL anticipates increased traffic at VIA and advises passengers to arrive three hours prior to departure.
