Chief Justice Urges Lawyers to Stay Updated on Legal Changes

By Hussain Shinan Published February 18, 2025

In a recent address to newly sworn-in lawyers, Chief Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan emphasized the importance of staying informed about the evolving legal landscape. Speaking at the Bar Council’s swearing-in ceremony, the Chief Justice encouraged legal professionals to familiarize themselves with new laws and developments in the field to effectively serve their clients and maintain the integrity of their practice.

With 32 years of experience in the legal profession, Chief Justice Adnan shared insights from his career, reflecting on the significant changes that have occurred over the years in the way legal work is organized and executed. He also highlighted key lessons he learned during his career, stressing the importance of confidentiality in legal practice.

“One of the most important pieces of advice I received was to maintain the secrecy of the matters we handle and uphold the integrity of the position we hold as lawyers,” the Chief Justice remarked. He further emphasized that lawyers must be diligent in protecting sensitive information, citing examples such as corporate accounts, which should never be disclosed to unauthorized parties.

The Chief Justice also pointed out that the introduction of the constitution and other legal reforms has brought about substantial changes in the legal system. These changes, he noted, are part of the ongoing development that lawyers must adapt to in order to keep pace with the progress in the field.

“As lawyers, we must stay updated on these developments. We can only move forward if we embrace these changes,” he said.

During the ceremony, a total of 37 new individuals were sworn in under the Legal Profession Act, marking an important milestone for the Bar Council. Since the implementation of the new law, a total of 448 individuals have been formally inducted as lawyers. The Bar Council also noted that the changes in the legal system have led to an increase in the number of professionals entering the field, reflecting the growing interest in the legal profession.

As the legal landscape continues to evolve, Chief Justice Adnan’s remarks serve as a timely reminder for all lawyers to remain vigilant, embrace change, and uphold the standards of confidentiality and integrity that are central to the profession.
