Distribution of Saudi-Donated Dates Begins Ahead of Ramadan

By Hussain Shinan Published January 20, 2025

The Islamic Ministry has commenced the distribution of dates donated by the Saudi Arabian government to the Maldives in preparation for the holy month of Ramadan. The initiative, launched on Monday, is aimed at ensuring households across the country receive the traditional staple for Iftar.

The distribution in Malé City, Hulhumalé, and Vilimalé is being carried out from the Islamic Center in Malé during designated hours—9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on working days. For residents in the atolls, local councils have been tasked with facilitating the handovers, ensuring equitable access to the donations. The distribution will continue until February 6, according to the Islamic Ministry.

To streamline the process, households are being identified by their unique electricity meter numbers, and recipients are required to present their national identity cards at the collection point. Each household is entitled to receive one packet of dates on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Ministry also confirmed that in addition to the household allocations, a portion of the dates will be distributed to local organizations hosting communal Iftar programs during Ramadan. This effort aims to support collective worship and community gatherings during the holy month.

Saudi Arabia has been a consistent donor of dates to the Maldives, symbolizing the strong bilateral ties between the two nations and reinforcing the spirit of Ramadan through such gestures of goodwill.

Residents are encouraged to collect their packets promptly before the February 6 deadline, as the Ministry works to ensure smooth and efficient distribution across the islands.
