”Economic Sabotage”: Foreign Minister Accuses Opposition of Threatening Tourism Growth

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 4 hours ago

Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel has issued a stern warning against what he termed a “harmful” campaign by opposition figures to sabotage the Maldivian economy. Speaking at the opening of the PNC Hulhumalé Central campaign office on Tuesday night, the Minister alleged that opposition elements are actively lobbying foreign governments and international bodies to discourage tourists from visiting the Maldives.

Key Allegations: Tourism and Development Under Threat

Minister Khaleel revealed that several international counterparts have informed him of direct requests to halt tourist arrivals to the archipelago. He characterized these actions as a direct assault on the livelihoods of Maldivian families.

  • Economic Sabotage: The Minister claimed a group of Maldivians is spreading “misinformation” to tarnish the country’s global reputation.
  • Funding Obstruction: Beyond tourism, the opposition is accused of urging foreign nations to withdraw financial support for critical developmental projects.
  • Government Rebuttal: Khaleel noted that the administration has been successful in refuting these claims by “presenting the truth” to international partners.

Clarifying the 2026 Referendum

Addressing international concerns regarding the government’s proposal to hold presidential and parliamentary elections concurrently, Dr. Khaleel dismissed rumors of electoral interference. He clarified that the move—set to be decided in a public referendum on April 4, 2026—is purely an administrative measure to streamline the democratic process and reduce costs.

“One official questioned whether we were attempting to disrupt the electoral process. I clarified that our objective is simply to streamline the process by holding the elections concurrently,” Khaleel stated.

Impact and Context

The Minister’s remarks come at a sensitive time for the Maldives. While the tourism sector has shown resilience with over 224,000 arrivals in January 2026, the industry remains vulnerable to geopolitical shifts and internal political rhetoric. By linking political opposition to economic harm, the government is framing the upcoming referendum and elections as a choice between national stability and “administrative improvement” versus political obstruction.

The proposed constitutional amendment would align the two major polls starting in 2028, a move the government says could save the state approximately MVR 150 million.
