In a significant shift within the Maldivian political landscape, the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has officially dissolved. The Elections Commission (EC) confirmed the dissolution in a gazette announcement, stating that the PPM Senate had completed the necessary procedures in accordance with the Political Parties Act.
The decision to disband was unanimously reached during an emergency Senate meeting on December 2, 2024, chaired by Vice Presidents Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam and Defense Minister Mohamed Ghassan Maumoon. All 42 participating members voted in favor of the resolution.
At the time of dissolution, PPM had 34,698 registered members. The party was established in 2011 by former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and led the Maldives from 2013 to 2018 under President Abdulla Yameen’s leadership.
In recent years, PPM operated in coalition with the People’s National Congress (PNC). However, internal conflicts and strategic shifts led to the decision to dissolve. Notably, former President Yameen resigned from PPM in November 2023 to form a new political entity, the People’s National Front (PNF).
The EC has initiated the formal dissolution process, during which PPM is prohibited from engaging in political activities or conducting transactions outside the procedures necessary for dissolution. The party’s assets and funds are to be transferred to the state, overseen by a committee formed for this purpose.
This development marks the end of PPM’s 13-year presence in Maldivian politics, closing a chapter that significantly influenced the nation’s recent history.
