President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has confirmed that families allocated flats in the Malé region will begin moving in by late January, aligning with the start of the new academic year on January 27. The announcement came during a meeting with residents of Machchangolhi, where the President directly addressed growing public concern over the delay in handing over the long awaited units.
The flats, originally allocated under the previous administration’s Gedhoruveriya scheme, were granted to beneficiaries despite being incomplete. The current government has since taken charge of finishing the project, with the President emphasising that tangible progress is now finally underway.

Residents raised repeated questions during tonight’s meeting, prompting the President to clarify that the Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation is in the final stages of connecting electricity to the buildings. He noted that while earlier commitments targeted July for completion, the technical work required more time than anticipated.
“FDC is currently undertaking the necessary work to connect electricity. The pace of work will accelerate this December,” President Muizzu said.
According to him, most flats will receive power within December, while the remainder will be energized by January. Once electricity is connected, families will be able to move in before school begins.
“People will be able to move into the flats by the time schools reopen. FDC has given me assurance of this,” he stated, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to resolving housing challenges across the capital region.
