The Maldivian government has distributed more than 111,800 cases of canned tuna as a Ramadan gift to households across the country, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has revealed.
Speaking during the first episode of Rayyithunnaa Eku, a newly launched podcast by the President’s Office, Dr. Muizzu emphasized that his administration prioritizes supporting citizens during the holy month, given that the Maldives is a 100% Muslim nation.
This year, the government provided each household with a 48-can case of tuna, a staple item in Maldivian cuisine, particularly during Ramadan. The President highlighted the smooth and efficient distribution of the gift, noting that the vast majority of recipients have already collected their cases.
“As of now, a total of 111,808 cases have been collected, with 61,909 distributed to households in the atolls and 49,899 in Malé,” he said. “While arrangements remain in place for those who have yet to collect their cases, nearly all households have already done so.”
The initiative was first announced in November last year during a ceremony marking President Muizzu’s first year in office.
Last Ramadan, the government focused on easing financial burdens by offering discounts on utility bills and distributing 1.6 million kilos of essential food staples to 82,000 households. The President has confirmed that utility bill discounts will be extended again this year.
The Ramadan tuna distribution reflects the administration’s continued commitment to providing direct relief to citizens during the fasting month.
