Fenaka Steps Up for Ramadan: Utility Discounts as Part of President Muizzu’s Relief Package

By Hussain Shinan Published March 3, 2025

Fenaka Corporation has joined the growing list of institutions offering relief during Ramadan by announcing a series of utility bill discounts for its customers. The reductions, covering both water and electricity charges, come as part of a broader initiative directed by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to ease the financial burden on households during the holy month.

The utility company will apply discounts based on four specific methods, ensuring fairness and transparency in the calculation process. One of the key aspects of the discount structure is the comparison between customers’ Ramadan consumption and the average bills from the previous months. However, February, March, and April of the previous year, which were noted as some of the warmest months, will be excluded from the comparison to provide a more accurate and reasonable discount.

The first part of the discount system involves calculating the difference between customers’ Ramadan consumption and their average bills from the nine months leading up to Ramadan, excluding the identified warm months. Fenaka ensures that this approach reflects realistic consumption patterns.

Additionally, Fenaka guarantees a minimum 10 percent discount for all customers. In cases where the calculated difference is less than 10 percent, the company will apply a discount that meets this threshold, ensuring a consistent benefit for all customers.

A particularly customer-friendly aspect of the new discount structure is that even if Ramadan consumption is lower than the average, customers will still receive the full 10 percent discount. This guarantees that customers will not miss out on savings even if their usage decreases during Ramadan.

For new customers who connect to water and electricity services during Ramadan, Fenaka has introduced an automatic 10 percent discount on their first bill, regardless of their prior usage history. This inclusion ensures that all customers, new and old, will benefit from the Ramadan relief program.

Fenaka’s transparent approach to calculating discounts will allow customers to estimate their utility costs in advance, helping them avoid unexpectedly high bills. This, in turn, provides peace of mind and allows families to budget more effectively during the month of fasting and beyond.

This initiative follows similar efforts by the State Electric Company (STELCO), which has also announced a 10 percent discount on electricity bills for Ramadan. Both Fenaka and STELCO’s discounts are part of President Muizzu’s broader strategy to support citizens during this significant period and ensure their financial well-being is protected.

As the government continues to roll out various measures to ease the challenges of Ramadan, these initiatives are expected to provide much-needed relief to Maldivian households, allowing them to focus on the spiritual and communal aspects of the holy month without the added stress of rising utility costs.
