In a fervent denunciation, First Lady Madam Sajidha Mohamed has condemned the recent assault on Mariyam “Mandhy” Zubair, a prominent activist of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). The incident occurred in the early hours following an opposition protest in Male’, where individuals donning helmets doused Mandhy with black oil as she rode her motorcycle home.
Expressing her outrage on social media, Madam Sajidha stated, “I strongly condemn the act of throwing black oil on MDP activist Mariyam Zubair last night.” She emphasized that such attacks and harassment are utterly unacceptable and urged restraint to prevent further unrest during these turbulent times. The First Lady also called for due process in establishing justice, advocating for a lawful and orderly approach to resolving conflicts.
This assault follows a series of contentious events involving Mandhy. During a recent MDP protest, she made unsubstantiated allegations targeting the President’s underage son, Umair Mohamed Muizzu. The MDP and its chairperson, Fayyaz Ismail, defended her statements, intensifying political discord. In response, Madam Sajida announced her intention to file a civil lawsuit against Mandhy, the MDP, and Fayyaz, asserting her maternal duty to protect her children’s dignity.
Throughout his political career, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and his family have refrained from retaliatory tactics and personal defamation. The President consistently advises all political entities to eschew violence and vengeful conduct, promoting a culture of respect and constructive dialogue.
The recent political protests has sparked widespread condemnation across the political spectrum. The Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) and the Ministry of Social and Family Development have issued statements urging restraint in political rallies and respect for individual rights. These developments highlight the pressing need for civil discourse and adherence to democratic principles in the Maldives’ evolving political landscape.
