Flydubai is set to begin cargo-only flight operations to the Maldives for the first time, introducing a new air freight link aimed at easing supply chain pressures.
The announcement was made by Mohamed Firaq, Managing Director of Ace Aviation Services, which serves as Flydubai’s local agent. In a social media post, Firaq confirmed that the flights will operate between Al Maktoum International Airport and Velana International Airport starting this Thursday.
According to him, the service will utilize “cargo-in-cabin” operations, where goods are transported within the aircraft’s passenger cabin, allowing for increased capacity during a period of heightened demand. These flights are scheduled to continue until the 29th of this month.
Firaq also noted that approval for the operations was granted by the Maldives Civil Aviation Authority, enabling the airline to commence services on short notice.
The move comes at a time when global aviation and logistics networks are facing disruptions, driven in part by rising fuel costs linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. For the Maldives, which relies heavily on imports—particularly for its tourism sector—air freight plays a critical role in maintaining supply chains.
“We gratefully welcome this initiative during these challenging times,” Firaq said, highlighting the importance of maintaining steady cargo connectivity.
Authorities have also indicated that discussions are ongoing with multiple airlines to explore additional solutions to ease logistical challenges and ensure consistent supply flows into the country.
