In a recent interview with Wion News during his official visit to India, Maldives Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel emphasized the government’s stance against anti-India activities, clarifying that the controversial ‘India Out’ campaign is spearheaded by former President Abdulla Yameen and not supported by the current administration.
Minister Khaleel reiterated the government’s commitment to enhancing the longstanding relationship between Maldives and India. He stated, “We are focused on moving forward, leaving past incidents behind. The ‘India Out’ movement was led by a former president who is not part of the government but stands in opposition.”
He expressed confidence that as bilateral relations strengthen, there will be no space for issues or discussions that could undermine these ties. He also acknowledged efforts by some to strain this relationship, citing a recent article in the Washington Post as an example.
Highlighting the robust economic, military, and security connections between the two nations, Minister Khaleel noted the government’s intention to progress beyond past events. Addressing dissent regarding the ‘India Out’ movement, he acknowledged that disagreements may exist within both opposition and government circles concerning certain governmental policies.
“However,” he clarified, “these are not reflective of government policy but rather individual opinions. Our respect for our relationship with India is mutual and unwavering.”
