In his Victory Day speech, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu appealed to Maldivian youth to learn the value of sacrifice that built the nation’s freedom. He reminded citizens that the Maldives’ independence was secured through courage, not convenience, and must never be taken for granted.
The President honoured fallen heroes, including soldiers and civilians who defended Malé on 3 November 1988, as well as historical figures such as Boduthakurufaanu and Dhon Bandaara. “They placed duty above life, faith above fear, and country above self,” he said.

Dr Muizzu emphasised that every generation must pass down this spirit of patriotism. “We must teach our youth who we are, who sacrificed for this nation, and how much those sacrifices cost. Only then will they value every penny of freedom earned by our ancestors.”
He linked this message to the government’s broader effort to instill nationalism through structured youth programs. The President said the new National Service initiative aims to cultivate discipline, patriotism, and national pride among young people, ensuring that “the flame of selfless service continues to burn bright”.
