Today, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu delivered his second Presidential Address to the People’s Majlis, emphasizing an unyielding dedication to preserving the Maldives’ independence and sovereignty. He reaffirmed his primary commitment to ensuring that nothing compromises the nation’s autonomy.
Enhancing Defense Capabilities
President Muizzu detailed ongoing initiatives to strengthen the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) across multiple domains:
- Maritime Security: Efforts are underway to double the operational capacity of the MNDF Coast Guard. This includes acquiring new vessels and rapidly establishing additional Coast Guard centers to ensure robust maritime defense.
- Special Operations: The “Special Boat Squadron,” inaugurated on November 3, 2024, has been deployed for specialized Coast Guard missions, enhancing the nation’s rapid response capabilities.
- Aerial Surveillance: The MNDF Air Corps, established on March 15, 2024, has introduced unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to monitor Maldivian waters. These UAVs have successfully identified numerous foreign vessels engaged in illegal activities within the nation’s territorial waters.
Strategic Infrastructure Development
To further bolster defense readiness, the President announced plans to construct air stations in both the northern and southern regions of the Maldives. These facilities will enhance territorial monitoring and response efficiency. Additionally, significant investments will be made to expand the MNDF Marine Corps’ capabilities and upgrade the Girifushi Training Center to modern standards.
Strengthening Domestic Security
Addressing internal security, President Muizzu highlighted the government’s priority to enhance the Maldives Police Service’s effectiveness in maintaining peace and order. He assured that by the end of the year, every inhabited island will have an established police presence.
Tackling Social Challenges
The President also addressed pressing social issues, notably drug abuse and gang-related activities. He emphasized plans to bolster the Maldives Police Service’s capacity, both in human resources and equipment, to implement sustainable solutions to these challenges.
President Muizzu’s address delineates a comprehensive strategy aimed at fortifying the Maldives’ sovereignty, enhancing defense infrastructure, and addressing critical social issues, underscoring his administration’s commitment to the nation’s enduring independence and prosperity.
