From Raa to Meemu: Monsoon Sparks Yellow Alert Across Key Atolls

By Ahmed Ashraf Published May 19, 2025

The Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) has issued a Yellow Alert for regions stretching from Raa Atoll to Meemu Atoll, warning residents and travelers of heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds expected to persist through Monday morning. The alert, in effect from 7:30 AM to 11:30 AM on May 19, comes as the southwest monsoon gains strength across the archipelago.

According to the Met Office, wind speeds are anticipated to range between 19 to 24 mph, with gusts reaching up to 40 mph, leading to rough sea conditions. These adverse weather patterns are attributed to the intensifying southwest monsoon, which officially commenced in the southern atolls on May 7 and is now progressing northward.

The onset of the southwest monsoon marks a seasonal shift characterized by increased rainfall and turbulent seas, typically lasting from May to November. The Met Office has advised residents, especially those in the northern and central atolls, to exercise caution and stay updated with the latest weather forecasts.

Travelers and maritime operators are urged to remain vigilant, as the combination of heavy rainfall and strong winds may lead to hazardous conditions at sea. The public is encouraged to monitor official channels for updates and heed any advisories issued by the authorities.

As the monsoon season sets in, the Maldives braces for a period of challenging weather, underscoring the importance of preparedness and caution during this time.
