In a decisive move to safeguard the health of future generations, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu unveiled plans to implement a “Generation Ban,” aiming to prevent young Maldivians from ever taking up smoking. This initiative, discussed during the President’s Office podcast ‘Rayyithunnaa Eku,’ underscores the government’s commitment to reducing tobacco use nationwide.
The “Generation Ban” strategy involves prohibiting the sale of tobacco products to individuals born after a specific year, ensuring that they will never legally purchase cigarettes or related items. This approach mirrors successful policies in countries like New Zealand, which have pioneered such measures to create smoke-free generations.
President Muizzu also announced a phased plan to eliminate tobacco imports over the coming years, further demonstrating the administration’s dedication to public health. Complementing these efforts, the government intends to make fruits and vegetables more affordable, promoting healthier lifestyles across the Maldives.
By adopting the “Generation Ban,” the Maldives aligns itself with a growing global movement to eradicate smoking among youth, joining nations like the United Kingdom, which has introduced similar legislation to incrementally raise the legal age for tobacco purchases.
These bold steps reflect President Muizzu’s unwavering commitment to fostering a healthier, smoke-free future for all Maldivians.
