From Soldier to Tech Trailblazer: Ooredoo Maldives’ Hussain Niyaz Named Among Asia’s Top 10 Tech Leaders

By Ahmed Ashraf Published May 20, 2025

In a remarkable ascent from military service to the forefront of digital innovation, Hussain Niyaz, Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) of Ooredoo Maldives, has been recognized as one of Asia’s Top 10 Tech Leaders for 2025 by TradeFlock Asia Magazine.

Niyaz’s journey began with a 12-year tenure in the Maldives National Defense Force, specializing in electronics and communications. Transitioning to the private sector in 2005, he joined Ooredoo Maldives as a technician. Over the years, he climbed the ranks, serving as Head of Networks and eventually taking on the role of CCO.

Under his leadership, Ooredoo Maldives has achieved significant milestones, including surpassing long-standing competitors in market share. Niyaz’s approach emphasizes inclusive digital transformation, focusing on initiatives that bridge the digital divide across the Maldives. He has championed digital literacy programs, educational partnerships, and collaborations with local councils to ensure that technological advancements benefit all segments of society.

One notable initiative is the designation of N. Landhoo as the first “digital island” in the Maldives. Through close collaboration with the island council, Ooredoo Maldives facilitated the adoption of digital tools like portals and digital wallets, resulting in 90% of transactions shifting to digital methods.

Beyond his corporate responsibilities, Niyaz contributes to national development as a council member at Maldives National University, where he provides real-world insights to policy decisions. He also works with government bodies to advocate for the digitization of public services.

Reflecting on his journey, Niyaz stated, “I began my career in the military, serving 12 years in communications, which laid a strong foundation in discipline and technical expertise. Recognizing the rise of telecom, I joined Ooredoo Maldives as a technician and steadily advanced to become Head of Networks, overseeing nationwide infrastructure. A major turning point came when I was appointed to lead the commercial division, which was an unconventional move that combined technical insight with business strategy. This transition proved pivotal: within a few years, we captured significant market share from a dominant local competitor, redefining Ooredoo’s position in the industry and marking a landmark achievement in my career.”

Niyaz’s recognition by TradeFlock Asia underscores his transformative impact on the telecommunications landscape in the Maldives and his commitment to leveraging technology for societal advancement.
