“Google Dhivaru will accelerate innovation nationwide”, says Ooredoo Maldives CEO Khalid Al Hamadi

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 7 hours ago

Ooredoo Maldives CEO Khalid Al Hamadi said the newly announced Dhivaru subsea cable system will mark a defining moment in the nation’s digital future. Speaking to the Google Cloud Blog, he said the project strengthens the Maldives digital backbone and creates powerful new opportunities for sectors such as tourism by enabling smarter operations, enhanced customer experiences and stronger global competitiveness.

Route of Google Dhivaru Cable

Google introduced Dhivaru as a trans Indian Ocean cable linking the Maldives, Christmas Island and Oman, designed to expand reach, reliability and resilience across the region. The company said the rapid rise of AI services has increased the need for stronger connectivity, and Dhivaru aligns with its long term strategy to support next generation digital services.

Al Hamadi said the partnership reflects the growing momentum of the Maldives digital transformation. He noted that Ooredoo Maldives continues to expand world class digital services nationwide and that Dhivaru will accelerate innovation by improving network resilience and reducing latency. He also said the investment positions the Maldives to benefit from new economic and technological opportunities emerging across the Indian Ocean region.

Google confirmed that the project includes a new regional connectivity hub in the Maldives. The facility will support cable switching to maintain high availability, content caching to speed up delivery of popular digital services and colocation space for carriers and local businesses to host equipment securely and efficiently.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu welcomed the investment as a strong endorsement of the Maldives stable and open investment environment. In his statement, he said the Dhivaru project directly contributes to his vision for a diversified and digitised economy and strengthens the nation’s role at the crossroads of global connectivity.

With the Dhivaru system, the Maldives moves closer to becoming a central digital gateway in the Indian Ocean, supported by strategic partnerships and a fast advancing national digital ecosystem.
