President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the “Cool School” initiative, aimed at air-conditioning all government schools in the Maldives, is progressing well and is slated for completion by September 2025. During his visit to Hulhudhuffaaru in Raa Atoll, the President emphasized that the project has reached an advanced stage, with the initial focus on installing air conditioners in classrooms where teaching occurs.
Launched on June 2, 2024, by Education Minister Dr. Ismail Shafeeu at Maafushi School, the “Cool School” project is a directive from President Muizzu to enhance the learning environment for students nationwide. Minister Shafeeu highlighted that the initiative extends beyond temperature control, aiming to foster positive changes in student discipline and overall school atmosphere.
The project entails significant financial considerations. Minister Shafeeu previously stated that approximately 9,400 air conditioners are required to cool all classrooms across the country, with an estimated capital expenditure of MVR 600 million. Additionally, the annual maintenance and repair costs are projected at MVR 3.5 million and MVR 10 million, respectively, bringing the total annual operational cost to MVR 178.5 million.
To address the anticipated 38% increase in electricity consumption due to the new air conditioning systems, the government plans to source 30% of the required energy from renewable sources, such as solar power. This approach aligns with President Muizzu’s commitment to sustainable development and reducing the nation’s carbon footprint.
In a gesture of support, the Chinese government has donated air conditioning units to the Maldives’ “Cool School” project. The handover ceremony took place at the Centre for Higher Secondary Education (CHSE) in Malé, where Chinese Ambassador Wang Lixin presented the units to Education Minister Dr. Ismail Shafeeu. These units are designated for installation at CHSE’s Hulhumalé branch, contributing to a more comfortable learning environment for students.
President Muizzu’s administration remains dedicated to improving educational infrastructure and resources. The “Cool School” initiative is a testament to this commitment, aiming to provide a conducive and comfortable learning atmosphere for students throughout the Maldives.
