The Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, led by Minister Maryam Mariya, has initiated discussions to explore ways to expand business opportunities for individuals in the agricultural sector. These talks, which involved key stakeholders including the Maldives Industrial Development Free Zone (MIDFZ) and AgroNat, were aimed at strengthening the agricultural sector’s growth and improving the livelihood of farmers.
According to the Ministry, the primary focus of the discussions was enhancing supply chain management through collaboration between various entities. By improving the efficiency and coordination among stakeholders, the government aims to provide more opportunities for small-scale farmers, ultimately leading to better financial outcomes and improved living standards.
Minister Mariya emphasized that the joint efforts of different agencies will be critical in addressing the challenges that farmers face and in creating sustainable business prospects. She underscored the government’s commitment to expanding the agricultural sector and improving the economic standing of local farmers, despite the obstacles that the industry continues to face.
As part of these efforts, the Ministry has been engaging in ongoing discussions with several organizations, including the Maldives Bureau of Statistics. These talks focus on gathering more accurate data regarding farmers and crop cultivation, which will be vital for implementing more targeted and effective policies. Additionally, the Ministry is exploring measures to enhance food security, which remains a key priority for the agricultural sector.
Through these strategic initiatives, the government is looking to create a more robust agricultural ecosystem, supporting farmers in their efforts to increase productivity and connect with broader markets. The long-term goal is not only to boost farmers’ incomes but also to improve the sector’s overall sustainability, ensuring that agriculture continues to play a significant role in the Maldives’ economy.
