The Office of the President has refuted allegations of extravagant spending by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and the First Family, asserting that the administration has in fact reduced operational costs compared to previous governments.
The claims, which surfaced in a report by opposition-aligned Channel 13, alleged that the First Family engaged in excessive expenditure during a recent weekend visit to the Presidential Retreat in Aarah.
In response, Minister at the Presidential Palace, Iqbal Adam, dismissed the accusations as unfounded and politically motivated. Speaking to state broadcaster PSM News, he described the report as “completely baseless” and said it misrepresents the administration’s commitment to fiscal responsibility.
“We are following the President’s clear directive to avoid unnecessary or lavish expenses,” Iqbal said. “These fabricated allegations, especially during a time when the government is actively cutting back on costs, only serve to mislead the public and stir unnecessary controversy.”
The Minister further noted that since President Muizzu took office, the operational budget of the Presidential Palace has been significantly scaled down. He emphasized that such measures are part of broader efforts to exercise financial discipline amid challenging economic conditions.
Iqbal also condemned the spread of misinformation, urging for a more responsible approach to political dialogue and media reporting.
The Muizzu administration has made cost control a key focus since taking office, pledging to limit wasteful government expenditure and increase transparency in public spending.
