Indian High Commissioner Munu Mahawar has highlighted President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s recent visit to India as a pivotal moment in enhancing the long-standing ties between the two nations. In a recent interview, Mahawar referred to the October visit as “fruitful and successful,” emphasizing that it laid the groundwork for stronger cooperation across various sectors.
Speaking to the State Media PSM, Mahawar noted that discussions during the visit focused on reinforcing bilateral relations and outlined a strategic roadmap for future collaboration. He described the visit as a milestone in the historical partnership between India and the Maldives, aimed at addressing mutual development goals.
Reflecting on his tenure, the outgoing High Commissioner, who was appointed in 2021, detailed India’s contributions to Maldives’ development initiatives. These include financial aid, human capacity-building programs, and projects in critical sectors such as healthcare, infrastructure, and defense.
Among the key defense projects Mahawar highlighted were the construction of the MNDF Senahiya Hospital and a state-of-the-art training facility on Maalifushi. He also underscored India’s broader efforts to enhance security in the Indian Ocean region, emphasizing the importance of collaboration with the Maldives in ensuring regional stability.
“As neighbors, India’s aim is to work closely with the Maldives to ensure the safety and security of the Indian Ocean,” Mahawar stated.
As his tenure comes to a close, Mahawar expressed hope that India would continue to be a trusted development partner for the Maldives, building on the momentum of recent collaborations. He reiterated his confidence that relations between the two nations would reach new heights in the future.
