The State Electric Company (STELCO) has taken a significant step to address the increasing electricity demand in Hulhumalé by officially launching its new backup powerhouse, the Hulhumalé Annex 2 Powerhouse, just in time for the peak consumption season.
Located on a 48,000-square-foot plot, the facility was developed in record time and is expected to bolster the island’s energy capacity, particularly as electricity usage surges following Ramadan. The inauguration ceremony, held to mark the completion of the powerhouse, was attended by STELCO’s Managing Director, Hussain Fahmy, who praised the dedication and efficiency of the company’s staff.
“Despite the tight timeline, our team has demonstrated exceptional commitment in delivering this crucial infrastructure,” Fahmy said. He added that this new powerhouse will help meet the anticipated rise in demand, which, for the first time, is expected to remain stable during Ramadan.
This stability is largely attributed to the directive issued by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to close government offices during the last ten days of Ramadan, aligning with the school holiday period. However, Fahmy pointed out that while Ramadan consumption is expected to remain steady, the real challenge will come after the holy month, when temperatures rise and electricity demand typically peaks.
To meet this challenge, STELCO has made provisions for a robust power supply. The Hulhumalé Annex 2 Powerhouse is equipped with 12 generator sets, each capable of producing 1.6 megawatts. Seven of the generators are already operational, with the remaining five set to be activated during Ramadan to ensure a smooth transition into the post-Ramadan months.
Speaking at the inauguration, Fahmy emphasized the teamwork and national dedication behind the project. “The staff worked tirelessly, cleaning the 48,000-square-foot land, removing approximately 200 tons of waste, leveling the ground, and installing vital infrastructure, including fuel pipelines and cables, all within just nine days,” he said.

The project received close attention from President Muizzu, who provided oversight throughout the development process. Fahmy acknowledged the president’s proactive role, particularly in acquiring the land for the powerhouse and in guiding the company through potential obstacles.
Once fully operational, the Hulhumalé Annex 2 Powerhouse will provide a total installed capacity of 19.2 megawatts, significantly enhancing the energy infrastructure in Hulhumalé. Although capacity-related outages are not anticipated, Fahmy urged residents to remain patient in case of technical disruptions.
STELCO’s efforts reflect a larger commitment to ensuring a reliable and sustainable energy supply as the population and infrastructure of Hulhumalé continue to grow. With the new powerhouse, STELCO is well-positioned to handle the rising electricity demand and maintain a steady supply for the island’s residents, especially during the critical post-Ramadan months.
