Hulhumalé lights back in hours as STELCO resolves rare cable fault swiftly

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 1 hour ago

Electricity has been fully restored to all residential towers in Hulhumalé Phase 2 after a rare disruption caused by damage to a primary power cable, with STELCO emphasizing the speed and efficiency of the response.

The State Electric Company Limited confirmed that the outage began at approximately 3:21 PM due to damage to one of four main supply cables, likely during excavation work. Despite the unexpected nature of the incident, response teams acted immediately, restoring electricity to all major residential towers, including Hiyaa and Vinares flats, by around 11:30 PM the same night.

Officials noted that such widespread outages are uncommon in the Maldives, particularly in urban zones like Hulhumalé Phase 2 where infrastructure reliability remains consistently high. In comparison to many countries where similar faults can lead to prolonged blackouts lasting days, the rapid restoration within hours reflects the strength and responsiveness of the national power system.

A small number of customers in the Hulhumalé Phase 2 beach area remain temporarily without service, with crews currently installing a temporary cable to complete full restoration.

STELCO thanked residents for their patience and cooperation, highlighting that the quick recovery demonstrates both the resilience of the network and the capability of frontline teams to manage unforeseen disruptions efficiently.
