“Independence Was Earned Through Sacrifice—Now It’s Ours to Protect” — President Muizzu

By Ahmed Ashraf Published July 27, 2025

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has declared that while development is visibly sweeping across the Maldives, the true foundation of national progress lies in the hearts and minds of its people. Addressing the nation at the official 60th Independence Day ceremony held this morning at the Maldives Centre for Social Education (MCSE), the President called on every Maldivian to rise with pride, purpose, and patriotism.

In a stirring address, President Muizzu underscored that meaningful progress cannot be achieved through physical transformation alone. “Development will remain hollow unless it is accompanied by a deep commitment to character building, national values, and self-betterment,” he asserted. Emphasizing that genuine change begins within the individual, the President said every citizen must embrace their identity, honour their heritage, and give utmost priority to the Dhivehi language, Islamic faith, and national values.

Reflecting on the sacrifices that led to independence six decades ago, President Muizzu paid tribute to the courage and resolve of past generations. He reminded the nation that preserving this hard-earned legacy is not the responsibility of the government alone—it is a sacred duty that must be upheld by every Maldivian.

“There is no shortcut to sustaining sovereignty,” the President declared. “Only through unity, sincerity, and an unwavering love for the nation can we protect the independence handed down to us.” He stressed that safeguarding this freedom requires collective strength and a clear national identity anchored in pride and purpose.

Reaffirming the government’s unwavering commitment to citizen-focused development, President Muizzu stated that while foreign partnerships are important, the transformative work that defines the nation’s future must be driven by Maldivians themselves. “We will welcome assistance when necessary,” he said, “but the leadership in shaping our destiny must come from within.”

Calling for unity and resolve, President Muizzu urged the public to move forward with shared conviction, noting that a nation can only be as strong as the values that guide its people. He assured citizens that his administration will continue to serve with integrity, dedication, and a clear vision to fulfil its pledges and uplift every corner of the country.

As the Maldives marks 60 years of independence, President Muizzu’s message serves as a powerful reminder that the true essence of freedom lies not just in sovereignty—but in the strength, values, and unity of its people.
