Country is set to pay its final respects to the legendary musician Mohamed Majid, popularly known as Mezzo Mohamed, who passed away at the age of 59. A public viewing is scheduled today at the Islamic Centre in Malé from 1:00 PM, followed by the funeral prayer after the Asr prayer.
Mezzo Mohamed died on Wednesday afternoon shortly after being admitted to the emergency room of Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in Malé. He was reportedly being treated for a heart attack.
A pivotal figure in the Maldivian music scene since the early 1970s, Mezzo Mohamed was renowned for his original compositions during a time when such works were scarce. He released four albums featuring 40 of his original songs, with hits like “Kamana Gothee Aadhanuthaa,” “Jismu,” and “Maaliaraaney Maaliaraaney” resonating deeply with audiences.
Beyond his musical contributions, Mezzo Mohamed was an active participant in the Maldives’ democratic movement, advocating for political reforms and playing a role in the country’s transition to multi-party democracy in 2008.
Following his passing, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu expressed his condolences to Mezzo Mohamed’s family, acknowledging his remarkable contributions to Maldivian music over a career spanning 45 years. The President described him as a beloved and talented artist who produced numerous original Maldivian songs.
