The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company has reported significant progress in the development of the harbor in K. Maafushi, with construction now focusing on key coastal protection structures.
According to MTCC, work is currently underway on the outer breakwater, where rock boulders are being placed as part of efforts to strengthen the harbor’s resilience and support its expansion.
The harbor development project, which began on May 22, 2023, has now surpassed the halfway mark in terms of overall completion. The initiative is aimed at enhancing capacity and improving marine access for the island, which has seen growing activity in both tourism and local transport.
The scope of the project includes extensive dredging works, with tens of thousands of cubic meters of material being removed to deepen the existing harbor basin, expand the facility, and improve the channel entrance. In addition to dredging, the project also involves the construction of multiple protective and structural elements, including breakwaters, revetments, and quay walls.
MTCC detailed that the development will feature a combination of rock and sand-filled breakwaters, along with revetment structures made from rock boulders and geo-bags designed to safeguard the shoreline. A quay wall stretching hundreds of meters is also being built to improve docking capacity.

Further components of the project include the installation of marine infrastructure such as mooring rings and buoys, as well as the construction of an access platform, jetty, and bridge. The development will also see the addition of street lighting and the paving of key operational areas to improve overall functionality.
Valued at MVR 82 million, the project is scheduled for completion within a 600-day timeframe. Once finished, the upgraded harbor is expected to significantly enhance maritime operations and support economic activity in Maafushi.
