The Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has completed a major land reclamation project in Thaa Atoll’s Veymandoo, reclaiming approximately 25 hectares of land within just 23 days, according to officials.
President Mohamed Muizzu announced the completion of the project in a post on X, noting that the work began on March 12 and was finalized over the weekend.
The project utilised the FILIPPO BRUNELLESCHI, one of the world’s largest trailing suction hopper dredgers, to carry out the reclamation work at an accelerated pace.
Key Development Project
The reclamation effort forms part of broader plans to support development in Veymandoo, with authorities previously highlighting the need to expand land area to accommodate future growth.
During a visit to the island in September last year, President Muizzu underscored the importance of the project, describing land expansion as a critical requirement for the island’s development. He also noted that the initiative was part of his presidential campaign commitments.
At the time, the President had assured residents that 25 hectares of land would be reclaimed under the agreement, with work expected to proceed without interruption once launched.
Fast-Tracked Completion
The completion of the project within just over three weeks marks one of the faster land reclamation efforts undertaken in the Maldives, reflecting increased capacity in large-scale infrastructure works.
Officials say the newly reclaimed land is expected to open up opportunities for housing, public infrastructure, and future development projects on the island.
