MACL Confirms Major Upgrade for Airport Reps at New VIA Terminal

By Ahmed Ashraf Published 16 hours ago

As Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) finalizes preparations for the highly anticipated new terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA), speculation has emerged suggesting Airport representatives (Reps) may be left out of the upgraded facility. However, official sources have firmly dismissed these claims, confirming instead that Reps will benefit from significant service enhancements.

Airport Reps are a vital part of the Maldives’ tourism infrastructure, serving as the welcoming face for international visitors. Their presence, often in bright uniforms with name boards, is among the first impressions guests receive upon arrival. Despite their essential role, Reps have long faced challenges due to space constraints at the current terminal — operating under the sweltering sun, in overcrowded areas, and often with little room to perform their duties.

MACL has assured that these long-standing issues are being addressed comprehensively in the new terminal design. A designated, premium area will be provided within the arrivals section specifically for Airport Reps. This climate-controlled, spacious zone marks a stark contrast to the congested pathways and heat-exposed waiting zones of the past.

“The new terminal represents an upgrade, not a downgrade, for our Airport Reps,” a MACL official confirmed, countering misinformation circulating on social media. “This is part of a broader vision to elevate the entire arrival and departure experience for all stakeholders”.

In line with international airport standards, the departure process at the new terminal will also be restructured. Passengers will now proceed directly to the check-in counters before undergoing security screening — a system adopted at major airports in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. While in many global hubs Reps may access check-in areas only under special circumstances, MACL has confirmed that their approach will prioritize smooth passenger flow while maintaining vital support roles for Airport Reps.

Although the Airport Reps Association has not issued an official statement, a representative speaking on condition of anonymity expressed optimism, stating that “positive changes” are expected with the terminal’s launch.

As the Maldives continues to position itself as a global leader in hospitality, the transformation of Velana International Airport not only enhances infrastructure but reaffirms the country’s commitment to the people who deliver that service on the ground — starting with the very first smile at the arrivals gate.
