A key section of Boduthakurufaanu Magu in Malé will be closed in stages starting March 21 as the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) begins major redevelopment works under Phase Three of the coastal road expansion project.
Officials from MTCC confirmed that the stretch of road from the Henveiru Ferry Terminal to the Izzudheen Jetty will undergo phased closures to facilitate extensive road expansion and upgrading works along the capital’s northern waterfront.
The project has been awarded to MTCC at a cost of MVR 144,509,024.16 and is scheduled to be completed within 455 days.
To minimize disruption, the road closures will be implemented sequentially.
Road closure timeline
• Henveiru Ferry Terminal to Fishermen’s Park
Work begins: March 21
Status: Closed until completion of works and reopening.
• Fishermen’s Park to Jetty No. 5
Closure begins: March 30
Status: Closed until redevelopment of the segment is completed.
• Jetty No. 5 to Izzudheen Jetty
Closure begins: April 17
Status: Closed until the area is ready for public use.
Authorities also advised that no vehicles or marine vessels will be permitted to park or dock along the quay wall and breakwater within the project zones until the redevelopment works are completed and the areas are officially reopened.
Earlier phases of the Boduthakurufaanu Magu development project have already transformed sections of the capital’s northern waterfront. During the initial phase, the quay wall from the Fish Market area towards the central section of Jumhooree Maidhaan was extended seaward to accommodate a wider four lane asphalt road.
The redevelopment forms part of a broader vision by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to modernize and upgrade road infrastructure across Malé City. The initiative aims to improve traffic flow, expand road capacity and enhance connectivity along the capital’s busiest transport corridors as part of wider urban development plans.
