In a significant development amid a surge of violent gang incidents in Malé, police have detained a 31-year-old man suspected of being a prominent figure in a major local gang. The arrest took place at Velana International Airport earlier today.
The individual, identified as Hussain Areesh from Banafasaage, Gn. Fuvahmulah (Diguvaadu), was intercepted by police upon his return to the Maldives. Police revealed that Areesh had attempted to travel to Malaysia but was denied entry due to an active court order for his arrest. Subsequently, he was sent back to the Maldives on a different flight, where police took him into custody.
Areesh’s criminal history is extensive, encompassing 26 prior offenses. These include fifteen instances of assault, six drug-related charges, three counts of property damage, and two cases involving the possession of sharp weapons. Police indicate that Areesh has been a central figure in orchestrating dangerous crimes, particularly within a gang operating in the Maafannu area.
Recent violent episodes in Malé have seen the use of weapons such as hammer and axe. Notably, on February 4th, an individual on a motorcycle assaulted a person near IGMH by striking them on the head with an hammer. Authorities suspect Areesh’s involvement in this particular attack.
In response to the escalating violence, police have intensified their efforts, resulting in the arrest of several individuals connected to these incidents over the past week. The apprehension of Areesh marks a significant step in the ongoing campaign to curb gang-related activities and enhance public safety in the capital.
The community remains on alert as authorities continue their investigations and implement measures to address the root causes of gang violence in Malé.
