The Maldives has strongly condemned a series of attacks attributed to Iran targeting multiple Gulf nations, while simultaneously calling for an immediate ceasefire amid escalating regional tensions.
Speaking at the 44th meeting of the 61st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, Maldives’ Permanent Representative to the UN Office in Geneva, Dr. Salma Rasheed, voiced deep concern over the intensifying military situation across the Gulf. She warned that the continued escalation risks severe humanitarian and economic consequences for the wider region.
The Maldivian government denounced what it described as indiscriminate attacks against Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, and Jordan. At the same time, it also condemned military actions carried out by Israel and the United States against Iran, underscoring a balanced stance against all forms of aggression contributing to the crisis.
Highlighting the urgency of de-escalation, the Maldives called on the international community to step up diplomatic engagement aimed at securing an immediate ceasefire and restoring regional stability.
In a further show of support for multilateral action, the Maldives co-sponsored a resolution presented during the Council’s urgent debate addressing the human rights implications of Iran’s alleged attacks on Gulf states.
The statement reflects growing international alarm over the widening conflict, as countries increasingly push for coordinated diplomatic solutions to prevent further destabilisation in the strategically critical Gulf region. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has also made clear that the Maldives’ position stands firmly alongside Middle Eastern GCC nations amid the ongoing crisis.
