In a significant stride towards reinforcing its commitment to sustainable energy, the Maldives has appointed Ambassador Mohamed Hussain Shareef (Mundhu) as its Permanent Representative to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). The formal presentation of his credentials to IRENA Director-General Francesco La Camera took place at the agency’s headquarters in Abu Dhabi, marking a pivotal moment in the nation’s renewable energy journey.
Ambassador Shareef, concurrently serving as the Maldives’ Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. His distinguished career encompasses key diplomatic postings in Japan and Sri Lanka, as well as ministerial positions within the Maldivian government, including Minister of Human Resources, Youth and Sports. An alumnus of the University of Warwick and Keele University, his academic background in economics, politics, and environmental diplomacy underscores his suitability for steering the Maldives’ renewable energy initiatives on the global stage.
During the credentialing ceremony, Ambassador Shareef lauded IRENA’s instrumental role in advancing renewable energy technologies and expressed the Maldivian government’s gratitude for the agency’s ongoing technical support. He emphasized the nation’s ambition to source 33% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2028, aligning with the Maldives’ broader objectives of reducing fossil fuel dependence and enhancing energy security.
Director-General La Camera welcomed Ambassador Shareef’s appointment, affirming IRENA’s continued commitment to supporting the Maldives in achieving its sustainable energy goals. This collaboration is anticipated to catalyze further advancements in the nation’s renewable energy sector, fostering economic resilience and environmental sustainability.
The Maldives’ proactive engagement with IRENA since the agency’s inception in 2009 reflects its dedication to global climate action. Recent initiatives, such as the “Magey Solar” program and the planned 100 MW floating solar project set to commence in 2027, exemplify the nation’s innovative approach to renewable energy deployment.
Ambassador Shareef’s appointment is poised to enhance the Maldives’ influence within IRENA, facilitating greater collaboration and knowledge exchange. His leadership is expected to drive forward the nation’s renewable energy agenda, reinforcing its position as a model for sustainable development among small island states.
