Condemnation of Undermining Actions
Firmly opposing measures that jeopardize regional peace, the Maldives denounces the ongoing expansion of illegal settlements, land annexation, and any initiatives aimed at displacing residents of the Gaza Strip. The government also reaffirms its endorsement of Palestine’s bid for full membership in the United Nations.
Appeal to the International Community
The Maldivian government urges the global community to take decisive steps to uphold international law and safeguard the rights of the Palestinian people. It emphasizes that a political solution remains the sole viable path to enduring peace, envisioning two independent states coexisting in security, dignity, and mutual recognition.
President Muizzu’s Address to Parliament
In his yesterday address to the Parliament, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu emphasized that Gaza rightfully belongs to the Palestinian people and that no external entity should be allowed to encroach upon their land. He stated, “Gaza’s land belongs to the Palestinian people. The Maldives will never support any attempts by any party to displace Palestinians from Gaza.” The President also highlighted the Maldives’ role in international efforts to support Palestine, noting that the country co-sponsored a United Nations General Assembly resolution on December 19, 2023, seeking an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice on Israel’s obligations regarding humanitarian aid operations for Palestinians. He reiterated the Maldives’ recognition of pre-1967 borders as the rightful territorial boundaries of Palestine, support for East Jerusalem as the capital of an independent Palestinian state, and backing for Palestinian self-determination and their right to establish a sovereign nation. “This government will always provide full support, backing, and assistance to the Palestinian people in their efforts to realize their dream of establishing an independent state,” the President affirmed.
